This popular piano chord program presents a new lesson each week for a period of 24 weeks. The program has been formatted in this fashion for a reason – to allow enough time for assimilation of each concept before moving on. However, it is completely understood that people have different schedules and time allowances. So, here is the answer: you will always have access to your lessons. The suggestion is to just take your time with one before proceeding to the next, whether it takes you one week… or several! If a lesson arrives prior to your being ready to get involved with it, simply save it! This is completely acceptable. Let’s take a look at the key of C Major…

The scale that corresponds with the key of C Major is… can you guess????… you got it… C Major! Here is the C Major scale:

C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C

Now take a look at #1, #4, and #5, namely C, F and G.

In music scale degrees are generally notated as Roman numerals… so, in that case, the 1, 4, 5 would be referred to as the I, IV, V

Okay, what you want to do is build major chords on each of these scale degrees. The result would be:

C Major (I chord)

F Major (IV chord)

G Major (V chord)

Once you know these three chords, you’ve formed the “backbone” to the key of C Major. Yes, there are other chords, of course, but this is where you want to start.
